8 Mile

It
has to be said that, before seeing this film, I was fairly dubious.
I certainly wouldn’t
call myself a fan of Eminem and was slightly concerned that it would
be a weak biography filled with a number
of spare
minutes for him to showcase his material. However, as it turns out, I
was pleasantly surprised.
Eminem plays the role of Rabbit, a rapper from Detroit who is desperate
to make a name for himself in the music industry.
Unfortunately,
life isn’t great for the young artist. He’s
forced to live in a trailer with his alcoholic mum (Kim Basinger) after
breaking up with his girlfriend, and, on top of this, finds himself working
at the local factory in an attempt to save money for studio time.
Although
Rabbit clearly has talent, it’s confidence that he lacks.
Before he can make it big, he needs to prove to his rivals that he’s
good enough to earn their respect.
What follows is a journey of discovery from the nervous kid, choking
in the face of competition, to a victorious hero who walks all over his
enemies.
Although
8 Mile is essentially a biopic of Eminem’s life prior
to his success, it still tells a strong story, filled with drama and
humour that is consistently entertaining.
Eminem is also exceptionally good in his role. Although, I am inclined
to wonder whether he would be as convincing playing someone other than
himself. It will certainly be interesting to see if he takes on any future
productions of a different style.
All
in all, this is a must see movie. Maybe it will be more appealing
to a younger audience
but, as I discovered, you certainly don’t
have to like rap music to enjoy it.
