This modern day Cinderella story follows a hotel maid called Marissa
who accidentally bumps into a famous politician whilst trying on an
outfit owned by a wealthy guest. This instantly causes difficulty for
the struggling single mum as she leads him to believe that she is someone
of a different disposition.
What follows is a charming chain of events that shows the rapid extent
at which the couple fall for each other. As a result, Marissa finds
it all the more difficult to fight her feelings and is left with the
looming problem of her hidden identity.
Although Jennifer Lopez often appears to arouse different opinions
from the public, I found her to be thoroughly likeable throughout this
film. She quickly encourages the audience to warm to her so that they
are soon hoping to see a happy ending for her. And, as always, looks
stunning throughout.
This
romantic comedy is also something of a new challenge for Ralph
Phiennes, after numerous
high quality English dramas and more serious
roles. However, although it seems that comedy isn’t his forte
considering he left all of the humour to Lopez, he still plays the
role of the charming English gentleman extremely well and is consistently
likeable.
All
in all, Maid in Manhattan is a thoroughly entertaining ‘chick
flick’. Although it isn’t filled with strong comedy lines,
it is so heart warming that it’s sure to bring a smile to the
face of anyone who enjoys a good romance.
