About
Broadband
What
is Broadband?
Broadband
is the name commonly given to a recent technology that provides
high speed data connections over existing telephone lines, otherwise
known as ADSL (Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line). It is 'asymmetrical'
because its transmission rate from the Internet is far higher than
that to Internet, but that is OK because most people download far
more than they upload when connected to the Internet. As the name
indicates, it uses the Subscriber Line, ie the everyday telephone
connection, and passes the Digital signals of data transmission
across it. But, the great thing is, you can still use the telephone
line at the same time.
How
fast is Broadband?
There
are several available speeds, but even the slowest is ten times
faster than a 56kbps modem. Established users of Broadband would
never go back. If you see Broadband speeds you cannot fail to
be impressed.
Why
is Broadband described as 'always-on'?
Broadband
links open a permanent communications channel, like a leased-line
service, between the modem or router at your end and the Internet.
With a Broadband connection, you do not need to 'login' to use
the Internet, or endure the delay of doing so. You can sit down
at our computer and make your enquiry or collect your mail instantly.
Are
there security issues with being 'always-on'?
Yes.
You will have a choice between dynamic IP addressing and static
IP addressing. With the former your network will be hidden behind
a dynamically assigned IP address. A range of firewalling options
are available to complement our static ip service to protect your
computer from the threats associated with being connected to the
Internet 24 hours a day. Furthermore, your email will be scanned
for viruses before delivery.
Is
Broadband for me?
If
you do not access the Internet almost every day, never stay on
line for an hour or so and only use it in the evenings and at
weekends, then you should probably stop reading this page now.
Broadband is cost effective for those who use the Internet for
more than an hour or so several days per week or who logon a
lot on peak telephony charges. So, if all you do is run a domestic
mail account and look at the occasional Internet page that interests
you, you will probably want to stick to your modem. More intensive
users and small businesses will definitely want to consider broadband.
Will
I definitely be able to have Broadband?
Unfortunately,
not everyone can have Broadband. Not all BT exchanges are yet
equipped to handle it, although the number that are is increasing
weekly, and there are two other governing factors - distance
from the exchange and quality of your existing line. The Colebridge.net team
will be able advise you whether you live near enough to an enabled
exchange to receive the service.
Should
I not go to BT for Broadband?
You
could do, but what BT will sell you is no different to what you
can buy from Colebridge.net.
A Broadband package comprises a Broadband phone socket to terminate
your phone line, a modem or router to connect between the socket
and your computer, some software and an Broadband Internet connectivity
account. You have a wide choice of who to buy this package from,
if you want a reliable, and technically advanced service, based
on a network of the highest quality and security, and backed
by a 24 hour x 7 day support service, then look no further than Colebridge.net.
But
don't I need BT to connect me up?
Absolutely,
the package which Colebridge.net will
provide you with includes the work BT need to do at the exchange
end. You have the option of electing for BT to do the termination
work at your end as well, or the relatively straightforward self-installation.
Can
I really make phone calls whilst using the Internet?
Yes,
with Broadband, you can speak to someone on the phone and discuss
with web pages which you are looking at. At each end of the phone
line, the equipment combines and splits the phone and data signals.
How
will the Colebridge Trust benefit?
